Cryopreservation of eggs and spermatozoa: how, to whom, why?

Every day, scientists are looking for and improving methods that enable people who until recently were considered sterile to endure and give birth to your own child. One of these methods is cryopreservation. The essence of the technology consists in deep freezing of cells in liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -196C with the possibility of subsequent defrosting and use. All biological processes in cells stop, the life cycle freezes, and this makes it possible to store the material for a long time until the moment when it is in demand. The most effective and safe method of cryopreservation is ultrafast freezing vitrification. This method avoids the main danger of freezing the formation of ice crystals, which can damage cells during thawing.

Ovum freezing are recommended for the following factors of both medical and social nature. Among them:

– if a woman is faced with functional impairment or the need to remove the ovaries (in order to give birth to her biological child in the future)

– for patients with cancer before chemotherapy and radiation therapy, as they lead to a loss of the quality of reproductive cells

– if a woman wants, for one reason or another, to delay the onset of pregnancy without losing her reproductive potential.

– if a woman wants, for one reason or another, to delay the onset of pregnancy without losing her reproductive potential.

However, it is important to remember that female cells are very sensitive to the freezing process, and therefore the efficiency of oocyte cryopreservation is lower than the results of freezing embryos.

Sperm cryopreservation is indicated in the following cases:

– if a man has to undergo difficult treatment or when a man works in hazardous industries

– if the partner cannot be physically present at the clinic on the day of IVF

– when the spermogram indices do not meet the requirements for oligospermia (insufficient sperm count) and asthenozoospermia (their low mobility). In this case, sperm is donated several times with interruptions and freezing to accumulate the required number of active sperm.

It should be noted that cryopreservation of spermatozoa is a reliable protection against the transmission of various diseases in their undeveloped stage.

 Cryopreservation includes several stages:

Storage of biomaterial can be continued at the request of patients from several months to several decades. The storage period has no effect on the quality of eggs and sperm. Therefore, you can become parents again at any time, if you just want to!
