Male infertility – causes and treatment

Male infertility - causes and treatment

Let`s try to figure out why not always and not every man succeeds in becoming a father, and most importantly – what to do with the diagnosis of male infertility?

There are two main forms of male infertility – secretory and obstructive. In the case of the secretory form, the formation of spermatozoa in the testicular tubules is impaired; with the obstructive form, there are obstacles on their way to the urethra. Doctors diagnose four conditional categories of male infertility:

Hormonal Disorders as a Cause of Male Infertility

If there is a disturbance in the work of the pituitary gland or hypothalamus, then the hormonal background of a man undergoes changes. It is imperative to examine the content of hormones if the man had a delay in puberty or signs of abnormal growth or development in childhood. If the level of FSH in the blood is elevated, this usually indicates that very few or no sperm are produced in the testes.

    Violation of the vas deferens

Violation of the patency of the vas deferens, as a rule, blocks the exit of sperm into the urethra. With a unilateral violation, there is a decrease in the number of sperm in the sperm, with a bilateral one – their complete absence. Often such a defect is congenital, but sometimes it manifests itself as a result of infectious diseases, and this happens not because of infectious agents, but because of the consequences of inflammatory processes in the organs of the reproductive system. Any sexually transmitted disease – such as gonorrhea or syphilis – can cause obstruction of the vas deferens. Even trichomoniasis and chlamydia, which are now perceived as a minor disease, leave scars that impede the movement of sperm. Often, the inflammatory process develops into male infertility almost asymptomatic, this is especially common in cases of chlamydia, mycoplasmosis and ureaplasmosis.

Male infertility due to ejaculation disorders

Retrograde ejaculation is a disorder that causes semen to flow into the bladder during ejaculation. In some cases, very little semen is released from the urethra during ejaculation. This pathology may be congenital, and may be present in men with conditions such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, bladder neck injury, and in men after prostate surgery. This can be one of the side effects of taking medications such as antidepressants and drugs to lower high blood pressure.

Impact on male infertility of injury or testicular defects

Male testicles are the production of sperm and the warehouse where they are stored. Consequently, any disruption to their work, infection or injury can lead to the consequences of male infertility.

Such a congenital defect as cryptorchidism (undescended testicles) is practically a guarantee of the absence of offspring in a man. This disease is treated with surgery.
Varicose veins of the scrotum can also lead to infertility. The disease, as a rule, is accompanied by painful sensations and increased temperature inside the testicles. Spermatogenesis is impaired, spermatozoa “get sick” and lose activity.

How to restore fertility and how to treat male infertility?

Treatment of male infertility, however, as well as female infertility, should be started only after the correct diagnosis has been made, and this should be done by a specialist after examination and a series of tests.
Fertility treatments depend on the diagnosis. In case of impaired spermatogenesis, treatment of genitourinary infections, correction of endocrine disorders. Hormone therapy for male infertility is indicated for various disorders of spermatogenesis, mainly with impaired sperm motility, as a stimulation after the correction of underlying diseases, and less often as the main treatment.
In case of male infertility caused by varicocele, the outflow of venous blood from the testes is surgically improved. As a result, stagnation disappears, metabolism is normalized and spermatogenesis is restored. Surgical treatment is indicated in some other cases, for example, with inguinal-scrotal hernias, congenital anomalies of the urethra.
A few more general recommendations for future dads:
Mainly, it is necessary to normalize the mode of work and rest, to eliminate professional and household factors that have a negative impact on health. Treatment of diseases of the urogenital sphere, vitamin therapy, normalization of nutrition and the appointment of sedatives, if necessary, are carried out in all men who are undergoing treatment for male infertility.
