    Embryo transfer: what you need to know and how to prepare

    In a procedure such as IVF fertilization , embryo transfer is the final and very important step. This is a pleasant and exciting procedure that is completely painless.

    The expectant mother observes all the manipulations of the embryologist on a special screen, so she can be sure that everything is going on correctly and she is tolerated embryo.

    After the transfer, the period of the most common pregnancy begins. So it is very important to follow all the recommendations of the reproductive specialist in order to properly prepare for it. Since at this stage all aspects of the mother`s health are important.

    What to expect, how to build a daily regimen and when pregnancy occurs, says reproductive specialist (Odessa) clinic Lada.

    Recommendations before embryo transfer

    The date of transfer is set by a fertility specialist, based on the selected protocol (fresh or cryo), test parameters and patient history. Very important indicators are: hormonal background and readiness of the endometrium (the layer in the uterus to which the embryo attaches.

    For the success of the transfer, the psychological state of the woman is an essential factor. Any stress or intense excitement can cause hormones to fluctuate, which will reduce the chances of success. Therefore, it is recommended to pay attention to your physical and psychological state.

    For this, walks, yoga classes, meditation, light fitness are suitable. To tune in the right mood, you can do what inspires you.

    Avoid overheating or hypothermia, do not swim in the sea or pool, do not come into contact with sources of infection, be careful about your diet.
    If you experience any symptoms, be sure to report them to your doctor.

    On the day of the procedure, preparation for embryo transfer involves the following:

    • Showering without cosmetics;
    • Light breakfast;
    • Refusal from perfumery and decorative cosmetics;
    • Filling the bladder for better visualization of the uterus – it would be good to drink 1-2 glasses of water one hour before the procedure.
    • You must come to the Clinic 30-40 minutes before the start of the protocol;
    • Be sure to bring the necessary documents, positive attitude and good mood.

    How to behave after embryo transfer?

    The embryo replanting procedure takes 15-25 minutes. After that, the expectant mother rests in the ward. At this stage, our patients very often resort to the services of a reproductive psychologist (each of our IVF protocol provides 1 free consultation as a gift from the Clinic).

    Immediately after the procedure, it is recommended to lie down for 30 minutes to two hours on the back to reduce the tone of the uterus. The sensations after embryo transfer in a successful protocol are similar to those after a routine gynecological examination. Only in rare cases is a slight discomfort possible. Possible pain in the lower abdomen due to the introduction of the catheter. When embryo implantation is performed, mucous and smearing secretions are also the norm.

    From the moment of transfer, the development of the most common, natural pregnancy begins. From that day on, a woman is advised to treat herself carefully, since during this period the most fragile part of pregnancy occurs. Namely, the attachment of the embryo to the wall of the uterus.

    At this stage (from the day of transfer to the first ultrasound of the baby) it is recommended to exclude:

    • active sports – running, fitness, cycling;
    • weight lifting;
    • cigarettes and alcohol;
    • sauna, hot bath, bath – you can take a shower;
    • air travel and travel (especially to other countries);
    • sexual intercourse (at least 15 days, in the future it is better to consult a doctor);
    • foods that cause digestive problems (constipation, bloating, diarrhea – highly undesirable during this period);

    Watch out nutrition, drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, walk in the fresh air. And, again, we want to draw your attention to the psychological state. Fill your life with pleasant experiences.

    I would like to draw your attention to the fact that confirmation of pregnancy can only be obtained with the help of a hCG test and an ultrasound scan, 2 weeks after the transfer. So do not be nervous if at an earlier stage the test strip does not show a result of 9 at this stage it is useless).

    It is better to inform your doctor about any unusual sensations or symptoms for timely assistance.

    Embryo development after transfer by day

    What happens after transfer:

    Day 1 after embryo transfer

    Blastocyst ( 5-day embryo), continuing its development, gets rid of the membrane and goes outside for implantation into the endometrium. To make it easier for the embryo to go through this stage, in preparation for transfer, embryologists do a procedure called laser hatching. This is the incision of the blastocyst membrane with an ultra-thin and precise laser, which helps the embryo to “hatch” and is more likely to attach to the endometrium.

    Day 2 after embryo transfer

    The fertilized egg touches the walls of the uterus and penetrates into the mucous membrane. The embryo is fixed on the surface, where it will begin its development.

    Day 3 after embryo transfer: sensations

    There is a deepening into the endometrium. This process may be accompanied by minor bleeding.

    On the fifth day, you may experience discomfort in the abdomen. In the next two, the placenta is formed and hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) begins to be secreted, which stimulates further development.

    On what day after the transfer does the embryo take root?

    The embryo attachment takes place for 3 -12 days. Therefore, the hCG test is recommended after a two-week period.
